SENIOR DOGS

GRCGLA Rescue accepts dogs of all ages. We believe that adopting an older dog
makes a statement about the value of life at all ages.

What exactly is a 'senior' dog?
Veterinarians say that dogs start to fall into the category of 'senior' around the age of 7. However, it depends on the size and breed of dog.

Senior dogs were once owned and loved by someone. They lose homes for a variety of reasons, usually having nothing to do with their behavior or temperament, but more likely due to their owners being unable to keep them for reasons including: the novelty of owning a dog wearing off, allergies, death of a guardian, a new baby, loss of a job, financial instability, a move, a change in work schedule, a child going off to college, and various other lifestyle changes.

These dogs need homes just as badly as young dogs do, and make wonderful household pets. Older dogs can be as interesting and lovable as young dogs and they often come with wonderful qualities that younger dogs take years to grow into. The privilege of loving a senior dog makes every single day special, as you and your companion share love, friendship, and a special relationship that grows stronger with the knowledge that you have given this fine old dog a second chance at life. The love that grows from this knowledge is stronger than the pain of eventual separation.

By adopting an older dog we can make a statement about compassion and the value of all life at all ages. And, of course, just as a young dog has its whole life ahead of him/her, so does an older dog have the rest of its life in front of him/her.
